Moms: Give Your Hectic Day a Mental Makeover
Disruptive. Transformational. Is it Wall Street – or your living room? Whether it’s the out-of-balance washing machine or the kid who refuses to change shirts (on day three), running a home/career and raising kids is high energy. Lucky you, mom of the ship, you’re in charge. You may be the entire crew.
What can you do to restore your calm when you find yourself navigating a stormy sea and bailing out bathwater? Here are a few tips.
Find the silver lining (even if it’s aluminum foil)
Life’s ordinary troubles always have an upside. An object or opportunity lost makes room for a new one, and sometimes a rift in a relationship is the best way to knit it together differently. Seek out these silver threads.
- Broken dish? Great, one less to wash and a lovely excuse to go hunting for something nicer.
- Kids fighting? A teachable moment, the perfect chance you need to be the example and show your kids how to solve this kind of problem.
- Lame co-worker and you have to fill in? Your moment to shine, and something else to your credit come review time.
Funnel your energy toward the urgent AND important
What a timeless idea from productivity guru Steven Covey. As you look at your to-do list, can you separate the urgent from the important, and focus on items that are both? For example, the whining kid is urgent, the ticking noise in your car may be important, but your 3 p.m. medical appointment for the kid is both. (Better take a cab?)
Master your mission, 5 minutes at a time
So amazing but it works. Got so much to do it’s overwhelming? Break it down and do 5 minutes at a time, whether it’s cleaning, exercising, or some tough job. Small adds up.
Bottom line, next time you find yourself pulled into the vortex of a crazy day, try one or two of these tips. Be sure also to take 5 to take a walk, or to stretch and relax. And when your energy is low, E6 is there to plug the gap without excess sugar and caffeine, another smart way to set up your day for success.
